2011年、BBQ CHICKENS、8年ぶりとなるフルアルバムリリース。
2012年、札幌シティーハードコアの雄Slangの衝撃的な
PIZZA OF DEATH移籍。近年、ハードコアシーンとの接近が顕著な
PIZZA OF DEATHが2013年、新たに契約したのは
大阪ハードコアシーンの雄、SAND。ハードコアリスナーを除いて
東京ではあまり馴染みのない名前かもしれないが、
関西での支持の熱さは尋常ではない。
SANDは、MADBALLやSICK OF IT ALLなどに代表される
“ミッドテンポでヘヴィーなビート”や“メタリックなリフ”といった特徴を
もつニューヨークハードコアに衝撃を受け、1999年に結成。
2004年ごろから活動が活発になり、次第に国内だけではなく、アメリカ
を中心とした海外ツアーも行うようになる。
そして、2010年にはマンハッタンで開催された
ニューヨークハードコアの祭典「B'N'B BOWL」、2011年には
アメリカ東海岸の大規模フェス「EAST COAST TSUNAMI FESTIVAL」への
出演を果たす。その一方で、MADBALLやNEXT STEP UPといった
海外の大物ハードコアバンドを日本へ積極的に招聘するなど、
シーンの活性化に貢献している。そんな彼らの活動の象徴となるのが、
2002年から続く西日本最大のインディペンデントフェスティバル
「FREESTYLE OUTRO'」の主催。国内外のハードコア / パンクバンドや
ヒップホップアーティストが多数出演し、2011年開催の
「FREESTYLE OUTRO' 8」では、なんと4000人超の動員を記録した。
SANDは、このテのエピソードを挙げたらキリがないぐらい、
大阪のストリートシーンと密接な関わりを持つ最重要バンドであり、
シーンの顔役でもあるのだ。そんな彼らがPIZZA OF DEATHと
契約を交わすというのは、はっきり言って事件である。
そんな彼らが発表する約6年ぶりとなる新作「Spit on authority」は、
ハードコアの魅力が存分に詰まった極悪でブルータルな傑作。
冒頭の「Poser」から、“ビートダウン”と呼ばれる、
スローかつヘヴィーなグルーヴが炸裂し、テンポのアップダウンで
様々な表情を見せる。ライヴ会場で巨大なモッシュピットができあがる様が
容易に思い浮ぶ激重サウンドがたまらない。続く「Vanilla Shake」では
京都のラッパーANARCHYをフィーチャーし、ハードコアとヒップホップの
見事な融合を聴かせる。そう、SANDはハードコアバンドではあるが、
様々な音楽の良い部分を積極的に吸収することに躊躇がない。
M7「I」は、アルバム中盤のエッセンスとなっている
レゲエ×ハードコアチューンで、ちょっとした耳休めとしても
上手く機能している。そして、SANDの音楽的な柔軟性を示す
最たる例がボーナストラックとして収録されている「Country Road」。
これは同名異曲ではない。John Denverによる、
日本人にも馴染みのある大ヒット曲のハードコアパンクカバーだ。
「単純に好きな曲だから」という理由でピックアップした自由な発想がいい。
ハードコアだからどうということではなく、自身が気に入ったサウンドは
積極的に取り込む姿勢が、SANDと他のハードコアバンドの違いを
生み出している。しかし、どんなサウンドを取り上げたとしても、
SANDはアティチュードが圧倒的にハードコアなのだ。
それは今作を聴くことで充分お分かりいただけるだろう。
アルバムリリース直後より、ヨーロッパツアーからはじまり、
日本国内は全国30ヶ所を回るツアーも決定。
そのあとアメリカツアーが決まっている。音源だけでも良いが、
SANDの魅力が最大限に発揮されるのは、やはりライヴ。
今までに観たことがないような
世界水準の混沌とした風景を見せてくれるはずだ。

2011: BBQ CHICKENS release a new full-length album for the first time in 8 years.
2012: Sapporo hardcore band Slang signs to PIZZA OF DEATH Records.
In 2013, Osaka hardcore band SAND signs to PIZZA OF DEATH Records. People not familar with hardcore may not know the name, but they have a large following in Kansai. SAND, heavily influenced by NYHC bands such as Madball and Sick Of It All, formed in 1999 and plays mid-tempo heavy beats and metallic riffs. They began gathering steam in 2004 and started touring both domestically and in America. They traveled to NYC in 2010 and played at the “BLACK’N’BLUE BOWL” hardcore festival. In 2011, they played at “East Coast Tsunami Festival”, a large US East Coast hardcore festival. At the same time, they have been contributing to the domestic scene by inviting bands such as MADBALL and NEXT STEP UP to Japan and going on tour with them. As solid evidence of their success, they have been organizing West Japan’s largest independent music festival “FREESTYLE OUTRO’” since 2002. Hardcore and punk bands as well as hip hop artists both foreign and domestic perform at the event, and 2011’s “FREESTYLE OUTRO’8” saw more than 4,000 attendees.
Examples of SAND’s success and deep roots with the Osaka street scene are innumerable, and could even be considered the face of it. That they would sign to PIZZA OF DEATH Records is quite an event.
SAND’s “Spit on authorty”, their first new full-length album in 6 years, is an evil and brutal piece of hardcore music. RIght from the start slow and groovy breakdowns pummel the listener into submission, and changing tempos stir up many kinds of emotions. The massive mosh pits and intense sound at their live shows are undeniably fun.
The next track “Vanilla Shake” features the rapper ANARCHY from Kyoto, and successfuly blends hardcore and hip hop. SAND is a hardcore, but they take a lot of inspiration from many genres. Track #7 “I” is a reggae and hardcore tune that breaks up the album and gives the listener a moment to rest.
“Country Road” is a bonus track the puts SAND’s musical chops on full display, as it is a hardcore cover of John Denver’s famous song of the same name. The band is quoted as saying “We just like the song,” when asked why they decided to cover it. It is with comments like this that SAND shows how it’s different from other bands by refusing to limit their own sound with narrow definitions of hardcore music. No matter what kind of sound they may produce, they always have a knockdown attitude. That’s made quite clear with their new CD.
SAND went on a European tour immediately after releasing “Spit in authority”, and then returned to Japan to play 30 shows. They then embarked on a tour in America. CDs are good, but nothing beats seeing them live. SAND is sure to force listeners to reevaluate their standards regarding what a true lie experience is.
